Timelessly terrifying and profound are the fears of Franz Kafka. The thoughts of Kafka's burrow-dwelling protagonist reveal a manic need for security, shaped by prejudice, that today haunts minds and discussions, leading to inhumane consequences. The burrow-dweller knows what is right and wrong. With his own brow, he has carved a paradise into the forest floor and lives there at a safe distance from society.“Your house is protected, sealed off. You live in peace, warm, well-fed, lord, sole master of a multitude of passages and spaces, and hopefully you won’t sacrifice it all, but still, in a way, you will give it up…”
Repair work and leisurely strolls through the familiarity of his passages and spaces define his existence. In the calm of his burrow, he can breathe freely, sinking into a cozy sleep upon his accumulated supplies. He is the proud ruler of his self-created realm, a meticulous observer, and a medium for flickering fear in all its shades. No matter how he tries to ignore it – the world outside exists. They will come. They want him, they want to share in his wealth, to destroy him...
But who is “he” and who are “they”? – An evening at the theatre about isolation, fear, loneliness; about the challenges of feeling at home; when distrust of others and the desire for control seem to be the most important things.
About the Group:
Sabine Köhler and Heiki Ikkola have been working together as a company since 2006, bringing together theater makers, visual artists, and musicians into teams that experiment with and develop work and life strategies over long periods of time. The credo of their theater work is to engage with the unfamiliar, the other, the unknown, the impossible. The work of the company knows no genre boundaries and yet is not a miscellaneous assortment.
The expression of *Freaks und Fremde* always has its origins in puppetry. Sabine Köhler and Heiki Ikkola learned their craft at the "Ernst Busch" Academy of Dramatic Arts in Berlin. In their work, they confront uncomfortable questions and problems, for which they rarely have answers or solutions. They seek lively social dialogue and open themselves up to a variety of ways of thinking and art forms, even outside the protective walls of theaters and performance spaces.
Art Award of the City of Dresden.
