The Emperor's New Clothes

One day, two rascals arrive at the imperial palace. They claim to be able to sew the most magnificent clothes, very special clothes that would only be visible to the wise, but not to the foolish. Naturally, the Emperor wants these clothes. At last, he will be able to see who among his people and court is wise and who is foolish.

The two rascals set to work, but instead of sewing, they merely pretend to. Enthusiastically, they take measurements, wave around an imaginary loom, scissors, and needles in the air, finally pointing to the empty table and exclaiming:

“Behold, the clothes are ready!”

This play is an open puppet show featuring soft, almost life-sized textile figures. The puppets are performed on the floor in front of, and sometimes among, the children. The performer remains visible but is soon forgotten by the children. The puppets continuously involve their audience in the action. The play is like a large, soft, tangible picture book, brought to life by a single performer.
